Tiny Drawings Use Scale and Time

drawing on inside cover of old matchbook

Once a piano bar, now a Blockbuster Video store.

Krista Charles is an artist in New Mexico who makes detailed pencil drawings on the inside of matchbook covers. Years ago matchbooks were nearly as common as business cards and they advertised all kinds of commercial establishments.

Charles uses Google Street View to get current images of the business address featured on a particular vintage matchbook. She then uses those images as source material for a drawing. Sometimes the business has remained the same over the decades but often it has changed. Intimate scale and the passage of time are two design elements/principles at play in her work.
